Without a doubt, many of our founders had great respect for the Roman republican ideal, to the point that they even patterned our government buildings after their architecture. We called upon God to reject the monarchy of Britain but made no mention of God when we codified the legal documents of our own government, instead extolling the virtues of 'We the People.
