I had noticed before that like some Protestants, Tom Christie regarded the Bible as being a document addressed specifically to himself and confided to his personal care for prudent distribution to the masses. Thus, he quite disliked hearing Catholics-i.e., Jamie-quoting casually from it. I had also noticed that Jamie was aware of this, and took every opportunity to make such quotes.

In 'A Breath of Snow and Ashes' by Diana Gabaldon, the character Tom Christie perceives the Bible as a personal manual meant for his individual interpretation and sharing. His understanding leads him to feel uneasy about hearing others, especially Catholics like Jamie, quoting from the scripture without the reverence he believes it deserves.

Jamie seems to recognize Tom's sensitivities and deliberately quotes the Bible in conversation, perhaps to provoke him or highlight their differing beliefs. This dynamic illustrates the tension between their religious views, showcasing how personal interpretations can lead to conflicts in understanding sacred texts.
