If the case of unbearable pain that could not be alleviated, I could ask me to be sedated. Thus I would abandon sleeping this life and this world. I prefer that to have to commit suicide. It's something I don't want to do, for my loved ones. If I were alone in life, it could be an option, but today it is not.

The passage discusses the profound dilemma faced by an individual in unbearable pain. The speaker contemplates the idea of sedation as a means to escape suffering, equating it to a form of abandoning life without resorting to suicide. This suggests a desire for a dignified way out, following a sense of hopelessness while simultaneously rejecting the notion of taking one's own life.

Moreover, the speaker emphasizes the importance of loved ones in their decision-making. Despite the temptation to consider suicide if they were alone, the presence of family and friends provides a strong reason to persevere through their suffering. This illustrates the deep connections that bind people to life, even in moments of despair, highlighting the complexities of human emotions in the face of pain.

People pontificate, "Suicide is selfishness." Career churchmen like Pater go a step further and call in a cowardly assault on the living. Oafs argue this specious line for varying reason: to evade fingers of blame, to impress one's audience with one's mental fiber, to vent anger, or just because one lacks the necessary suffering to sympathize. Cowardice is nothing to do with it - suicide takes considerable courage. Japanese have the right idea. No, what's selfish is to demand another to endure an intolerable existence, just to spare families, friends, and enemies a bit of soul-searching.
