Songs of Innocence and of
Piping down the valleys wild Piping songs of pleasant glee On a cloud I saw a child. And he laughing said to me. Pipe a song about a Lamb; So I piped with merry chear, Piper pipe that song again- So I piped, he wept to hear.Drop thy pipe thy happy pipe Sing thy songs of happy chear, So I sung the same again While he wept with joy to hear Piper sit thee down and writeIn a book that all may read- So he vanish'd from my sight. And I pluck'd a hollow reed. And I made a rural pen,And I stain'd the water clear,And I wrote my happy songsEvery child may joy to hear.- "Introduction to the Songs of Innocence

Hear the voice of the Bard!Who Present, Past, & Future sees Whose ears have heard, The Holy Word, That walk'd among the ancient trees. Calling the lapsed Soul And weeping in the evening dew: That might controll, The starry pole; And fallen fallen light renew!O Earth O Earth return!Arise from out the dewy grass;Night is worn,And the mornRises from the slumberous mass.Turn away no more: Why wilt thou turn away The starry floor The watry shore Is giv'n thee till the break of day.- "Introduction to the Songs of Experience

And, father, how can I love you Or any of my brothers more?I love you like the little bird That picks up crumbs around the door.

A flower was offered to me, Such a flower as May never bore; But I said "I've a pretty rose tree," And I passed the sweet flower o'er. Then I went to my pretty rose tree, To tend her by day and by night; But my rose turned away with jealousy, And her thorns were my only delight.

The modest Rose puts forth a Thorn. The humble Sheep a threat'ning Horn. While the Lily white shall in love delight.Nor a Thorn nor a threat stain her beauty bright.

Can I see anothers woe,And not be in sorrow too.Can I see anothers grief,And not seek for kind relief. Can I see a falling tear. And not feel my sorrows share,Can a father see his child,Weep, nor be with sorrow fill'd.Can a mother sit and hear,An infant groan, an infant fear-No no never can it be,Never, never can it be.-

I wander thro' each charter'd street, Near where the charter'd Thames does flow. And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of woe. In every cry of every Man, In every Infants cry of fear, In every voice: in every ban, The mind-forg'd manacles I hear How the Chimney-sweepers cry Every blackning Church appalls, And the hapless Soldiers sigh Runs in blood down Palace walls But most thro' midnight streets I hear How the youthful Harlots curse Blasts the new-born Infants tear And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse.

I went to the Garden of Love, And saw what I never had seen: A Chapel was built in the midst, Where I used to play on the green. And the gates of this Chapel were shut, And 'Thou shalt not' writ over the door; So I turn'd to the Garden of Love, That so many sweet flowers bore. And I saw it was filled with graves, And tomb-stones where flowers should be: And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds, And binding with briars, my joys & desires.-

How can the bird that is born for joySit in a cage and sing? How can a child, when fears annoy,But droop his tender wing,And forget his youthful spring?"
