That ancient promise which found its ultimate fulfillment in the return of Jesus was fading from the expectations of many Christians. Many of today's churches no longer believed in the literal return of Christ. Instead, they believed in a version of the Order's philosophy which said Jesus was just another great man who had reached enlightenment. To them, mankind's ultimate hope did not find its fulfillment in the return of Jesus, but in the evolution of the human mind and spirit. Given enough time, enough knowledge, and a little evolutionary magic, and mankind would eventually become god on their own. They, the enlightened of mankind, instead of Christ, represented the finished capstone in mankind's destiny.
