Chinkultic is an archaeological site located in Chiapas, Mexico, and it is situated within Lagunas de Montebello National Park. The site carries historical significance, given its ties to the ancient Maya civilization. When explorers Stephens and Catherwood journeyed into Mexico, they stayed in the nearby village of Comitan, which was known to the Maya as Balun Canan, meaning "Place of Nine Stars," prior to Spanish colonization. Although Chinkultic is approximately thirty-five miles from Comitan, the explorers did not visit this site during their travels.
The notable work "Sky People" by Ardy Sixkiller Clarke provides insights into ancient cultures, including references to places like Chinkultic. The book highlights the deep historical roots of these sites and their significance to understanding Maya civilization and its legacy. Chinkultic, along with its surrounding areas, presents an opportunity for exploration and study of Mexico's rich archaeological heritage.
