In Jodi Picoult's "House Rules," the character Jacob is presented as an intelligent young man navigating the challenges of his life. Despite his capabilities, unexpected disruptions to his routine seem to unsettle him, revealing the vulnerability many face when confronted with sudden changes.
The quote suggests a comparison between Jacob's feelings and the anxiety one might experience when facing a daunting task, such as bungee jumping off a skyscraper.
