The bushes puzzled him, they were so big, almost trees, some twice his height, and there seemed so many. They were planted all along the edges of the towering droop-limbed hemlocks that sheltered the place, and in the acres sheltered there were dozens of great rectangular clumps like loaves of porous green bread. The bushes were evergreen. With their zigzag branches and long oval leaves fingering in every direction they seemed to belong to a different climate, to a different land, whose gravity pulled softer than this one.

The protagonist is struck by the size and abundance of the evergreen bushes that surround him. These bushes, towering like trees and planted along the edges of hemlock trees, create a unique atmosphere that feels distinct from his current environment. Their unusual shape and vibrant green foliage evoke a sense of wonder, as if they are from a different place entirely.

This vivid description highlights the contrast between the natural beauty of the bushes and the gravity of the protagonist's reality. The imagery suggests that the landscape around him holds an allure, a dreamlike quality that captures his imagination and contrasts with the weight of his life's struggles.
