The narrator reflects on how he has dedicated significant leisure time to self-improvement over the past year, yet realizes much of it has been wasted. He feels that despite his attempts to better himself, his experiences during peaceful walks in the pasture with respectable young women are overshadowed by lowly desires and impulses.
