The six elephants stood, roped each by the foreleg side by side in the vast thirty-foot tent put up several days since for their comfort; their trunks peacefully swaying as the cowardie scuttled back and forth with limp forkloads of hay. Small puffs of steam came from their mouths. Their breath was sweet, filling the sun-warmed, crisp air; and their hides, soothed, clean and lustrous from the water, lay calm on their great hips like the skin of the moon. Only at the end of the line the great bull stirred a little, the towering back swathed and padded and the knowing eye blurred.
The six elephants were lined up side by side inside a large, comfortable tent that had been erected several days earlier. They appeared peaceful, with their trunks gently moving as the timid workers, or cowardie, moved around them carrying hay. Warm steam escaped from their mouths, and their breath filled the warm, crisp air with a sweet scent. Their smooth, clean, and shiny hides looked calm and majestic, resembling the soft glow of the moon on a clear night.
At the end of the line, the largest of the elephants, the bull, showed slight movement. Its massive body was wrapped and padded, and its eye reflected a sense of awareness, though it seemed a little blurred or tired. The scene conveyed a peaceful yet powerful presence of these majestic creatures resting quietly in their enclosure.
