Decaying bodies are influenced by various environmental and situational variables. Factors such as weather conditions, burial methods, and the materials used for burial significantly impact the rate of decay. To explore these effects, the University of Tennessee's Anthropological Research Facility has conducted extensive experiments by burying bodies in different scenarios, including shallow graves, concrete encasements, and even manmade ponds. This research aims to replicate potential methods of body disposal that might be used by criminals.
By examining how these diverse conditions affect decomposition, the facility seeks to enhance our understanding of forensic science. The researchers simulate various disposal methods, such as placing corpses in car trunks and sealing them in plastic bags. Such studies provide insight not only into decay but also into how forensic experts can better estimate time of death and other vital information related to criminal investigations.
