Mindfulness is our emergency kit, readily available at any time. When we face a situation in which we feel indignation, if we mindfully investigate our own mind, we will discover bitter truths about ourselves: for example, that we are selfish; we are egocentric; we are attached to our ego; we hold on to our opinions; we think we are right and everybody else is wrong; we are prejudiced; we are biased; and at the bottom of all of this, we do not really love ourselves.
Mindfulness serves as a vital tool that we can access whenever we encounter distressing situations. It encourages us to examine our own thoughts and feelings, helping us confront uncomfortable truths about ourselves. This process often reveals our tendencies toward selfishness and egocentrism, as well as our attachment to personal opinions and a sense of righteousness. Through this mindful awareness, we can identify our biases and prejudices, leading to deeper self-understanding.
Engaging in mindfulness allows us to see beyond our immediate reactions, exposing the root causes of our indignation. It highlights the lack of self-love that often underpins our defensive postures. By recognizing these aspects of ourselves, we can start to cultivate compassion and acceptance, not only for ourselves but for others as well. Ultimately, mindfulness provides a pathway to emotional resilience and clearer insight into our relationships and behaviors.
