As a naturally shy person, I loved the anonymity of writing before my career took off. I loved how my stories didn't care about my weight. When I started publishing that writing, I loved that, to my readers, what mattered were the words on the page. Through writing, I was, finally, able to gain respect for the content of my character.

Roxane Gay reflects on her experience as a naturally shy individual who found solace in writing. Before her career flourished, the anonymity of her work allowed her to express herself without the pressure of judgment based on her appearance. Her stories served as a safe space where her weight and personal insecurities were irrelevant.

Once Gay began to publish her writing, she appreciated that her readers focused on the quality of her words rather than her physical attributes. This shift helped her gain respect and validation for her character and creativity, as she felt that her true self was finally appreciated through her literary contributions.
